A Casual and Colorful Fall

The weather has finally changed to cooler temps and I can start to layer items to go with the weather. I love the diversity of fall. I can wear a skirt and tights one day and then leggings and a shark tail tunic the next.

While I do have a number of black pieces in my closet I will often pair black items with something colorful like a sweater or a scarf to give my outfit a bit of definition with a pop of color.

The first outfit I paired a beige, and gray top with gray pants. Gray can be just as diverse as black. The top and pants are from Avenue. My great patent leather shoes are from Alegria.

The outfit below is a favorite that I just pulled together from HIPS resale boutique 114 Main St.  Clawson, MI.
I bought the skirt specifically to wear tights and my Doc Marten boots. The sweater is from the Queen Latifah Collection, The skirt is Derek Lim and tshirt is from The Avenue. A fun bohemian look.

The love of purple, which is of course my favorite color. A very casual outfit for running errands and such. The top and pants are from Target and the multi-colored purple sweater is from Fashion Bug. My shoes are from  Abeo.

Orleans + Winder

I had the opportunity to have a chat with store owner Erin Wetzel and her amazing store Orleans + Winder.

BGB:    Tell me a little about yourself

Erin: I love design in all it’s incarnations, and I love to travel and explore cities solo. I am an only child and have always had a big independent streak and a vivid imagination. Being involved in fashion and design at this point in my life made perfect sense, I’ve come full circle in a way. I have a son who is eleven, and I love introducing him to the beauty of the artisanal object and also how important it is to support that way of creating.

BGB:    What was your catalyst for opening Orleans & Winder?

Erin:  A need to give the designers that I was coming across a presence here in Detroit. I knew that I wanted to open a store, but it had to be a very special store, with a very particular curation.

BGB: The name of the store is unique. Is there a reason for it?

Erin: Yes! We have lived here in the Eastern Market for almost 7 years and our loft is at the crossroads of Orleans and Winder. It was where our idea for a concept store was born and we liked the name, so it stuck!

BGB: Who is your target customer? What would make me stop into your store?

Erin: Our target customer is someone who loves well designed, timeless pieces with a unique twist. They are individuals with an artistic sensibility and a desire to seek out one of a kind, artisanal pieces, whether that piece is avant garde or more utilitarian.

BGB: When you decided to open a store was Detroit your first choice?

Erin: Absolutely. We live here and have set down roots in the Eastern Market. It was essential for us to be in the city and to create a platform for independent design in a way that hasn't been presented yet here in Detroit.

BGB: How long have you been in the retail market?

Erin: I am fairly new to the retail game, but I have found that it is a true passion of mine. My background is in the arts, and in particular, theater. When we decided to open Orleans + Winder, I dove into research and spoke with designers that we admired. They, and our clientele, have helped me tremendously on this path.

Orleans + Winder is located at 2501 Russell St. Ste. 200 Detroit, Mi 313-409-6343.

Fashionable and Cool

Being a fashion events blogger means that I attend all sorts of various social events. Those events call for all sorts of casual, upscale and black-tie fashions. I enjoy finding the right outfit for various occasions.

Spring Purs-onality

Despite the frigid temps and snow still on the ground the calendar says it is spring, even if Mother Nature has other plans.

Warmer temps and sun will be here soon enough and with warmer temps comes the chance to seek out new and vibrant colored hand bags for the warmer season.

I stopped into a Carson's store carsons.com and had a great time looking at the colors and designs for the upcoming season.

The first bag that caught my eye was this butter yellow bucket bag from Brahmin brahmin.com The leather is exquisite on this bag. Perfect for tossing in your sunglasses and other items you may carry.
Next I saw this Calvin Klein Tote calvinklein.com The gray is very light, what I would call a pearl gray. The bag features 3 detachable straps.
Hello Spring this floral tote from GAL features a bag in a bag. As it comes with additional smaller bag inside the tote.
Polka Dots and black and white. Whimsical and timeless. Cross body bags are a staple for the warmer weather when you don't want to be weighed down carrying a larger tote. This bag is also by GAL.
My favorite bag of the day, this multi-colored tote by Guess guess.com The muted gold and bright pink just caught my eye.
Michael Kors michaelkors.com has an entire line of soft pastel colored totes. This bag is in the hue of rose quartz, one of the two Pantone colors of the year for 2016.

I love the colors from Vera Bradley verabradley.com. But I especially enjoy the new hard sided bags that Very Bradley has introduced. The colors and designs are fresh and offer many sizes.

NM Cusp Spring Event

Spring is knocking at the door and Neiman Marcus hosted their CUSP event at Somerset Mall in Troy, Michigan. The boho style is still on point with lots of vibrant colors. Add in wide leg pants in both floor and capri length and Spring is sure to sing with style. Lots of lace, and cotton tops and skirts were shown as well.

Embellished jeans and fringe are also always a good choice when dressing for what can be a fickle spring day weather wise. Accessories for the season, the always chic fedora hat, jewelry adorned with stones and tassles and scarves, not just for your neck but brightly colored wraps for your head.
Who can turn down a Chanel oxford in silver? Espedrilles abound with embellishments.

Items featured are at Neiman Marcus Somerset Collection, Troy, MI www.neimanmarcus.com

Hot Winter Fashions

January is gone and February is here. In Michigan so far winter has been mild. We have had a few days of snow and cold, but nothing that has lasted for weeks or months so far.

So with this mild winter that we are experiencing I am able to wear items that are fashionable, warm and very versatile. I love wearing leggings in the winter. They keep my legs warm and I can wear a plethora of tops and sweaters with them.

While I have my share of black clothing, I do love colors. However, I seem to be in a gray phase. Varying shade of gray especially when mixed with other colors makes a wonderful fashion statement,

The few times that I have had to wear boots this winter, I found a stylish and very affordable pair from Monroe and Main.

Uncaged

Local designer Cheryl Zemke, owner of C. Creations Custom Sewing and Design presented her 5th annual fashion show fall 2015. "Uncagd" was the theme and featured designs from Cheryl, as well as hat designs by Derby Hats by Michelle.

Cheryl's designs were vibrant and colorful and most of all wearable. Yes, there were avant-garde pieces in the show. But overall Cheryl's designs are fresh and made to be worn. The show featured a plethora of models from children, teens, and plus size. There was something for everyone at this show.  You can contact:  Cheryl Zemke
